EUMETSAT awards VEGA extension to MTG Phase A Ground Segment
Study
31 October 2008 – Following the successful completion of the
Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) Phase A Ground Segment Study for
EUMETSAT, VEGA, a Finmeccanica company, and its subcontractor
SciSys, have been awarded an extension to investigate specific
technical focus areas, before the programme enters Phase B.
MTG provides the next generation of
geostationary weather satellites, the first of which is planned to
be launched in 2015. Currently, six satellite launches are planned,
with the programme running for 20 years.
VEGA was awarded the initial €500K Phase A Study in November 2007,
leading a consortium of European companies comprising SciSys (UK),
GMV (Spain) and VCS (Germany). The purpose of the Study was to
define a reference architecture for the MTG Ground Segment, and
provide programmatic information.
The areas to be covered by the extension include the Operations
Archive, Common Services and Evolution from the Meteosat Second
Generation programme.
VEGA Aerospace Business Development Director, John Auburn, said:
“VEGA has been working with EUMETSAT on all its major programmes
since it was formed in 1986, and we are excited to be able to add
the benefit of our expertise and experience in the early phase of
this programme.”
